EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

6DEGREES is an international postcard experience inspired by the “six degrees of separation,” the idea that any two people in the world can be connected through six social links.

The project explores how community amplifies through the unpredictable, analog medium of mail.

6DEGREES turns the “six degrees of separation” into something you can hold and keep.

PRODUCT STORY
Each 6DEGREES postcard chain invites participation from six people.

Write a note and pass it on in-person or through snail mail. Every recipient contributes a message, removes and keeps a postcard from the chain (now a one-of-a-kind souvenir layered with artwork and postage from its journey).

When the sixth person writes back to the first, 6DEGREES completes. Everyone along the chain receives an update. You are now all first-degree connections.

Anatomy of a 6DEGREES postcard chain passing through six people

Logging a postcard panel on 6DEGREES.US helps track each chain’s journey

Prototyping began in January 2025. 6DEGREES has since reached all seven continents (including Antarctica) with three attempts toward space. The pilot is live at 6DEGREES.US, with a real outdoor event where groups wrote postcards together at McCarren Parkhouse in Brooklyn, New York.

Every component was built by hand: hundreds of individually cut, folded, perforated, and assembled postcard sheets, with countless post office visits.

CULTURAL RELEVANCE & AUDIENCE
We’re more connected than ever, yet in 2025, loneliness was declared a global health threat. Instant messaging has made communication frictionless but weightless. 6DEGREES is a response: a deliberate, material act of reaching out, grounded in decades of social science.

The 1973 paper introducing “weak ties,” near-strangers outside our closest circles, remains the most cited work in the social sciences. Weak ties bring information, economic mobility, and life opportunities that our inner circles cannot provide. 6DEGREES becomes a physical catalyst for forming them.

VALUE PROPOSITION
6DEGREES does not compete with social media on convenience. The friction (the wait, the physical object, the handwriting), are all a mirror for human connection. Community takes time, effort, are unpredictable, and worth designing around.

Analog artifacts that require human handling are becoming rarer, and more significant. If you think back to the last time you received a handwritten letter or package, maybe it captivated your attention in a different, more memorable way than the infinite scroll.

USER EXPERIENCE
6DEGREES spreads by word of mouth and social media, with expansion built into the product itself.

Choosing a prompt to start the chain

Writing the first letter in the chain

Logging the code at the bottom of each panel

The chain traveling beyond the first person

Every person tears off a panel, keeps it, and addresses a new side

Pre-addressing the sixth panel makes it easier for the last person to send the chain back

Everyone who signs up receives an update when the chain progresses

LEARNING FROM CUSTOMERS
Functionality and usage is top priority for Phase I! This is a nontraditional postcard and self-mailer format and requires many rounds of usability testing. We are currently on Prototype 4.0, with an accordion fold and printed postage guide embedded in the design.

Trends in destinations and types of recipients participants are sending to will inform how the product develops over time. These connections are core to 6DEGREES, and watching how they evolve over time (postal standard time) may yield fascinating insights into our culture.

Completion rates, where the chain is most likely to stall, and barriers to completion are also vital to iterating 6DEGREES.

COMPETITION & ECOSYSTEM

WHERE 6DEGREES PLAYS

6DEGREES differentiates itself through combining physical collectible artifact + social discovery + weak-tie theory in a single participatory format.

The global stationery market was valued at USD 147.56 billion in 2024, and is projected to grow to USD 225.99 billion by 2033 (Yahoo Finance). The experiential gifting segment is a fast-growing subcategory. Social loneliness as a declared health crisis is driving both institutional and consumer investment in connection-focused products. The broader analog revival (vinyl records, film photography, physical books, zines) demonstrates sustained appetite for the tactile in a digitally saturated world. 6DEGREES is positioned to capture meaningfully across these phenomena.

DESIGN STRATEGY
6DEGREES’ identity pulls from the language of international postage: cancellation marks, stamp perforations, ink bleeds, paper textures, airmail stickers, tracking numbers. Lo-fi and zine-like in some applications, 6DEGREES is easygoing and approachable without sacrificing the boldness of recognition in a stack of your other mail.
